WORLD POLIO DAY 2025

On this World Polio Day (Oct 24), we stand closer than ever to making polio the second human disease to be eradicated. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and countless partners, wild poliovirus cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988. Yet the last mile remains the toughest and requires sustained effort. At Liaison, we are honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate with several partners to commemorate this day - to look back on the progress that we have made together, but also the path that lies ahead towards complete eradication. Please see below a few new projects that went live today:

Liaison is excited to share UNICEF’s documentary “Gaza’s Silent Threat.” The film follows two humanitarian workers striving to vaccinate 600,000 children against polio-induced paralysis amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

We will be hosting a full film screening of the Japanese adaptation in Tokyo. We hope you’ll join us in honoring the courage of those who protect children’s health and in reaffirming our shared commitment to a polio-free world. Stay tuned for updates!

Liaison also had the opportunity to support Dr. Shigeru Omi (Rotary Polio Eradication Ambassador and former Regional Director of the Western Pacific Regional Office for the World Health Organization) and Rotary International in publishing an op-ed today on Asahi’s with Planet.

The article mentions TICAD9, the polio diet task force, and Japan’s leadership in eradication efforts. It also underscores the need for sustained ODA, strong parliamentary leadership, and active civil society engagement to bring eradication across the finish line.
