Dr. Sabawoon Presentation at Polio no Kai
Liaison Senior Advisor Dr. Wrishmeen Sabawoon Presents at Polio no Kai
On November 24, Liaison’s Senior Advisor Dr. Wrishmeen Sabawoon, MD, PhD joined the Tokyo-based polio community group Polio no Kai for their regular meeting, where he delivered a lecture titled “Polio Eradication in Afghanistan: Progress, Challenges, and Hopes for the Future.”
Dr. Sabawoon began by sharing his personal journey, from growing up in Hesarak District, Nangarhar Province, to studying at Kabul Medical University in the 1990s, and later completing his doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo in 2010. He also reflected on his service at Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health, including his leadership roles within the President’s Focal Point Office for Polio Eradication (2013–2019).
He then painted a vivid and informative portrait of Afghanistan, highlighting its rich history, deep cultural heritage, and diverse geography. Participants commented that they appreciated seeing a side of Afghanistan rarely portrayed in mainstream media.
Dr. Sabawoon concluded with a comprehensive overview of polio, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and the current epidemiological and operational context in Afghanistan, one of two polio-endemic countries left in the world. His insights on recent progress, ongoing challenges, and the path forward offered valuable learning for all attendees.
A special thank-you to Polio no Kai for their warm welcome and their continued commitment to polio survivors and eradication efforts.
